Challenge Yourself!

Challenge yourself!  I cannot repeat this enough.  We as human beings thrive on learning new things and having new experiences.  Unfortunately we also like to fall into a routine of doing the same thing every day.  This is some thing you have to acknowledge and make sure that you avoid it.  Instead, consistently find some thing new to do and some thing that is also challenging in some way.  In the Martial Sciences this means to constantly learn new skill sets and continue to progress regularly.  I have seen way to many skilled martial practitioners stop growing at some point in their training.  I really mean this in that I can count on my hand the number of practitioners that are constantly growing in the Martial Sciences.  Most people get to a certain level and then they get comfortable.  Once comfortable their skill sets regress and they simply are no longer that skilled martial practitioner.  To avoid this we have to constantly challenge ourselves.  Find new ways to train and be inspired!  Learn from everyone and anyone.  Train with a new teacher, go on a training pilgrimage to some place special, have a student who knows some thing that you do not teach you, intensify your workouts to the point that they are very, very strenuous, think like a professional athlete and train like one too, find a coach or mentor to help you with motivation.  Bottom line do not be satisfied.  Instead find some thing or some way to challenge your martial training.  Then apply this to all facets of your life!  Live on the edge by constantly having new experiences and challenge the status quo!  Live life to its fullest!!!

Although I do feel it is important to challenge yourself physically because I learned an awful lot about Taijiquan from training JKD, Jun Fan and Baguazhang, but it is not the only way to grow in a martial art. Challenge yourself mentally helps you grow as well, even it is looking at a style you have done for years with a different perspective, challenge yourself internally by looking deeply at your movement to find the internal connections and the power flow.

Hey, what can I say, I’m a CMA IMA guy, and I’m bound to look at things internally 🙂

    Hey Tim,

Great comment! When training challenge your mental skill sets as well and I agree whole heartedly at analysizing what you do and looking at it in depth and with new perspective!
