Great article Brian!
Great article Brian
Never brush them off, use to pay attention to it a lot in my State security days. But in Beijing one time they went kind of haywire.
Dark night, being followed by the largest Chinese man I had ever seen, (think Schwarzenegger, only 3 to 6 inches taller). I would stop and look at him and he would act like he was looking at the stars. This went on for a few minutes until I decided this was going to go bad quick, I was with my wife and her friends (who were all Chinese) and based on the guys size and him being about 20 years younger than me I was resigned to the fact that the best I could do was slow him down so my wife and her friends could get away (not a great feeling after about 30 years of MA training). I was ready, but luckily nothing happened. He followed us all the way in the building we were staying at. It was not until the next morning I realized what was really happening. I was not NYC and if it were NYC I do believe there would have been trouble. However I was in Beijing, in an area, after dark, where they never see foreigners in during the day. He was doing one of two things. Either trying to figure out what this foreigner was doing here or thinking I was up to no good because I was following 3 Chinese women and he was there to protect them.
But it did make me focus on my training so it was, in retrospect, a good thing
Thanks Mike!
Hey Tim that is an interesting story!
I have noticed through the years that if you are relaxed and pay attention you can pick up the subtle clues pretty easily. Having lived in some pretty dangerous places through the years. (one being Detroit and another growing up just south of Flint and going to Flint all the time) I can tell you that when people live in a “red zone” or a violent place they get in tune pretty quick or they become prey. If someone was ever staring at me I have always picked it up and then looked to locate the source. I have also noticed this behavior is exhibited on a higher scale in a “red zone” by the inhabitants. I have verified this when driving in red zones and stopped by staring at people. Invariably they look up and locate the source. Not everyone but of course the majority! Especially the drug dealers, hooligans, etc. They are in tune! We as martial practitioners have to be in tune. Like you said above never brush those clues off!
