Danger Will Robinson

Would that we all had a super powerful robot to let us know when danger was near.  Wait…. in a manner of speaking we do!  The human brain is like a super-duper computer.  While we are getting close to replicating it with computers it is still incredible and unexplainable in some areas.  There are so many complexities to it but slowly and surely scientists are unraveling its secrets.  One secret known to some martial practitioner’s is that we have the ability to perceive things both with our conscious and also with our subconscious.  Visual acuity and the ability to see our surroundings and potential danger sources is just one part of the puzzle.  A big part for sure but just one part of it.  The awareness that we have from our sight and hearing is actually awesome.  Our brain has been shown to take in info and if some thing is missing it will process and create a whole or complete picture.  Humans can really pick up a lot of information in that manner.  We and when I say this I mean we as the human species have the ability to also pick up on subtle clues that are all around us.  Our intuition allows us the ability to know when danger is coming.  We can feel danger!  You might get a queasy feeling in your stomach, the hairs on the back of your neck might stand up, you might just know that you are in a potentially violent situation.  You see we kind’ve do have that ability to know when danger is near.  The only part we have to consciously do is act on these clues.  That truthfully is that hard part.  Most people brush off these clues and then find themselves in danger.  The trick is recognizing them and acting on them.  That really is the hard part.  When you feel some thing, it probably is real and you need to act on it.  Take for instance a long time ago I was part of a team making an arrest.  I felt, know I knew that this individual was going to run.  So when he did take off I was in hot pursuit right from the get go.  In another instance I was in a confrontational situation where I was telling someone news that they really did not want to hear and this news was going to cost them a lot of money.  That individual was a poorly educated person, had a past history of violence and was 6 foot 6 and well over 300 lbs.  My partner and I had this conversation and the gentleman was really upset and had a hammer in his hand. (he was in construction and working on a project)  During the course of the situation I felt, know I knew that it was going to work out or be all right.  Over the course of thirty or forty minutes we talked this individual down and nothing happened.  He was not happy but he eventually was going to be able to deal with the situation.  My intuition let me know it was going to work out.  We can see and hear and that is a major part of our perception for awareness.  However, we can also feel danger.  This is some thing that our species has always had because we needed it.  The question is do you ignore warning clues?  Do you brush them off?  Or do you analyze them and act if needed.

Pay attention to those warning clues!

    Great article Brian

Never brush them off, use to pay attention to it a lot in my State security days. But in Beijing one time they went kind of haywire.

Dark night, being followed by the largest Chinese man I had ever seen, (think Schwarzenegger, only 3 to 6 inches taller). I would stop and look at him and he would act like he was looking at the stars. This went on for a few minutes until I decided this was going to go bad quick, I was with my wife and her friends (who were all Chinese) and based on the guys size and him being about 20 years younger than me I was resigned to the fact that the best I could do was slow him down so my wife and her friends could get away (not a great feeling after about 30 years of MA training). I was ready, but luckily nothing happened. He followed us all the way in the building we were staying at. It was not until the next morning I realized what was really happening. I was not NYC and if it were NYC I do believe there would have been trouble. However I was in Beijing, in an area, after dark, where they never see foreigners in during the day. He was doing one of two things. Either trying to figure out what this foreigner was doing here or thinking I was up to no good because I was following 3 Chinese women and he was there to protect them.

But it did make me focus on my training so it was, in retrospect, a good thing

Hey Tim that is an interesting story!

I have noticed through the years that if you are relaxed and pay attention you can pick up the subtle clues pretty easily. Having lived in some pretty dangerous places through the years. (one being Detroit and another growing up just south of Flint and going to Flint all the time) I can tell you that when people live in a “red zone” or a violent place they get in tune pretty quick or they become prey. If someone was ever staring at me I have always picked it up and then looked to locate the source. I have also noticed this behavior is exhibited on a higher scale in a “red zone” by the inhabitants. I have verified this when driving in red zones and stopped by staring at people. Invariably they look up and locate the source. Not everyone but of course the majority! Especially the drug dealers, hooligans, etc. They are in tune! We as martial practitioners have to be in tune. Like you said above never brush those clues off!
