Here is some video footage from a South African school featuring some knife violence.  While this is more of a duel and not an ambush it is still potentially what you could face anywhere in the world!

I would always advise getting away first in any edged encounter and only engaging if you have to! (ie. can’t run, defending family, etc.)   If you have to though engage with extreme determination!
