The Passing On Of IRT!

I take a lot of comfort in that I am trying to pass on IRT in a manner that is ethical and morally correct.  Lately I have been besieged to put out a fast track, correspondence courses, become an IRT instructor at a weekend camp, etc.  I have even had some very lucrative offers to do so through some very serious companies.  Still this is not the right way to pass on anything.

The martial sciences require a practitioner and instructor relationship where the physical, mental and spiritual skill sets are passed on in an oral (Japanese word Kuden) and physical manner.  On top of the oral and physical manner of passing on these skill sets you also have to have the written passing on of skill.  This can take many forms.  For instance Hatsumi Sensei the Soke of the Bujinkan received letters from his teacher Takamatsu Sensei.  These letters were and are important in many ways to how Hatsumi Sensei grew as a martial artist.  Hatsumi sensei in turn has passed on his art through book format. (as well as others)  Specifically the martial sciences in order to be passed on correctly require that the skill sets be taught in this manner.  You cannot learn them with any depth from a video or a book.  You have to have an instructor show you the way.  Otherwise you miss all of the details.  Now books, dvds and videos are a great supplement for training and I recommend them highly for that as long as you are receiving training from an instructor and getting the required hands on experience!

With Instinctive Response Training I have decided to take the long, slow route and pass on the physical, mental and spiritual skill sets to a few select individuals.  Those individuals hopefully in turn will pass it on in the future to others so that the next generation will have the opportunity to see what it is that we do!  In the end what is important is the quality of the individuals and their unique experience within IRT.  My hope is that they enjoy it as much as I do!

Once again, I feel honored to be a direct disciple of the legendary Brian Vancise! Hehehe. Really though, how lucky am I to have a world class instructor in my backyard? You have my word that if I ever reach instructor level, that I to will pass it on in the same manner.

Thanks Mike. It is a pleasure having you attend class and train hard. That is the beauty of what we do. We train hard in the physical, mental and spiritual parts of martial science!

    See you on the mats.

Stay true to your own vision; don’t sell out. While I only know you through the internet, I’m confident that you’re a person of great integrity and skill. Neither is worth compromising for a few bucks…

    Hey jks9199,

Thanks for stopping by at The Instinctive Edge and leaving a comment!
You are absolutely right in that one should never compromise their integrity or skill for a few dollars. In the end it is just not worth it!

    Thanks again.
