Train For The Moment!

You know professional athletes train so that they are at peak performance during the course of the game they are playing.  Take for instance the current 2008 NBA finals.  Kobe Bryant of the Los Angelos Lakers, Kevin Garnet, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics and all of both teams players have been training and working all year and all of their lives to be able to play in these games.  There moment is now in the NBA finals where only one team can win.  In the Martial Sciences our moment is the moment of truth when you have to use your skills to defend yourself or your loved ones.  With that in mind have you been training for the moment?  Really if you examine yourself have you been working as hard as you can so that in the moment you will be at your peak performance level?  We as martial practitioners need to constantly reassess our training regimen.  I roughly advise that every four to six months you need to tweak it so that you are maintaining constant growth and shocking your system.  From a teaching perspective that means I will be showing new things so that the practitioners can shock their muscle memory and add new skills.  For the martial science practitioner you need to take what you are taught and practice it on your own and make it part of you.  So that in the moment it will be there when you need it.  Each one of us also needs to supplement our martial skills with attribute building training.  Weight lifting, running, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc.  We need to make sure that our body is physically ready for the shock of a combative encounter if the moment ever sneaks up on us.  Personally my weight lifting regimen received a jump start about six months ago with the addition of kettle bell training.  Add in some pylometric and cardiovascular training and I have made some good gains.  If the moment ever happens again I know that my body will be responsive!  The moment can happen at any time.  It was not to long ago on the east coast that two convicted felons broke into a families house in the middle of the night.  What happened next was tragic in that they beat up the dad, raped his wife and daughter and eventually killed the women after a money exchange went bad.  The father was the only one to survive.  Literally I could point out something similar every month or even more frequently.  Real world violence happens so prepare and train because the moment can happen anytime.
