The Importance Of Physical Fitness For The Martial Practitioner!

…..Okay so you have found a great martial system to train in.  Excellent!  No doubt if you work hard in the Training Hall you will improve your cardiovascular conditioning and your strength.  However, if you really want to be in top physical condition then you need to work at it outside of class.  So what to do?  Well everyone will need to work at their own level and slowly build up.  Things I like to do outside of the Training Hall include but are not limited to: Kettle Bells, Bike Riding, Hiking, Mountain Climbing, Rock Wall Climbing, Swimming, Running, Resistance Training, Heavy Bag and Focus Mitt Work, Pylometrics, Archery, Isolation Exercises, Serious Abdominal Work, etc.  Really I look at every day as a possibility to improve in some area and through different forms of exercising I am constantly giving my muscles a shock.  Now words of caution, start out slowly and make sure that you allow your muscles to recuperate.  When doing Kettle Bells I try to do them every other day or every third day to allow my muscles to rest.  The same applies to running, swimming, etc.  Another word of caution is that if your muscles are sore and you have really been getting after it then you might want to give them a break for a couple of days.  That is also something that can be very, very important.  Needless to say as a Martial Practitioner you need to be fit and in shape and ready to go at a moments notice.  The criminals out there will not wait for you to be in shape nor do they care if you are fatigued.  Bottom line a true martial practitioner maintains their fitness just as they also try to improve their technical abilities.  Keep training and improve not only your technical skill set but also your attributes!

See You On The Mats!
