…..I think it is real important that you know and understand your State knife laws. Following are a couple of sites that try to stay up to date and keep people informed.

The above sites should not be taken as the final word as you should check directly with your local state websites to ensure accuracy but these sites do help. I would also advise speaking with an attorney and if you do carry a knife do so for a reason. For myself I carry a legal sized folding knife that I use every day to open boxes, salt bags, etc. It is an indispensable work tool that I would be at a loss with out.

It’s important to make sure you get good advice, and don’t just “ask your cop buddy.” I know lots of cops in VA who will tell you that a blade over 3 inches is illegal to carry concealed — and they’re dead wrong. The only place the blade length matters for that is on school grounds. Oh, and a recent law making it illegal to carry a machete or other blade longer than 10 inches concealed. Otherwise, it depends on whether the knife meets the definition of razor, dirk, bowie, etc. or “weapon of like kind.” In fact, a relatively recent case makes it clear that even a 10 inch chef’s knife wouldn’t count, even if concealed from common observation.
Read the code books, and if you’re really concerned, talk to a lawyer familiar with the practices in your area. And, even then, it’s probably smart to carry a smallish folder that can arguably be seen as a useful tool, not just a self-defense tool.
