Nagging Injuries!

Back Hand

…..Right now I have some nagging injuries.  While in Tennessee I hyper extended my knee and this may have caused me to walk differently which inflamed and old achilles tendon injury.  So while I am still functional I need to be careful in my training and allow them to heal up.  Through out your Martial Science training you will have some injuries.  This really is unavoidable if you stick with it.  I have often felt it is what you do to improve when you have the injuries that separates us.  Our injuries must heal.  This is essential.  We must rest them and allow them to improve.  Yet if we are careful we can work around these injuries and still make improvements in other aspects.  I have witnessed people injured who sat in chairs to train, only participated in aspects that did not affect their injury and basically worked around an injured arm by only working the other side.  When I was practicing BJJ once my knee blew out.  Prognosis was to rest it and see if it would heal.  So I did rest it by not rolling for six months.  However, during those six months I worked on my technique with my training partners.  I made great progress and when the knee started feeling better then my game had actually improved.  Nagging injuries happen, however we can continue on by training differently.  Of course you should always consult your physician for their recommendations and follow them accordingly. That just makes common sense!  Needless to say my two current injuries will heal within time.  I just have to not over due them and I am certain they will be as good as new!

See You On The Mats!

    GREAT advice

If you can’t work on one thing, work on something else. And I can tell you when you said “you should always consult your physician for their recommendations and follow them accordingly” is MOST important. And I was (in my youth) very good at NOT listening to my physician and paying the price for that by extended down time due to injury and on occasion making it much worse.

Currently I am very well acquainted with this subject. I cannot do forms or much else that is part of my martial arts training due to a broken heel. However I can work on the internal and I can do stationary bike work and I can do some seated weight training. And it is this injury that I have that is allowing me to take the internal side of my training and try and apply that to the stationary bike and weight work and I am learning a lot during this time due to the injury. So although I would rather not have the injury at all I am finding that turning it into a learning opportunity is much better and more productive than letting it get to me. My forms suffer but I believe in general my training does not.
