…..I do quite a bit of meditation both for relaxation as well as visualization. Meditation has long been touted as an effective method for training. This I can say is absolutely true. World class athletes from every country use forms of visualization during their training and so should you! When visualizing I slowly break down technique and movement to see it clearly. A long time ago when visualizing thing’s may have been more along the lines of outlines but now it is just like watching a TV screen. When taking a technique and breaking it down I can see the movement and how I need to move and the eventual conclusion. Of course you need to know the movement first to gain benefits from visualization but if you do and you practice this regularly you may be incredibly surprised with the benefits to your Martial Science training. I had an instructor who would always say, “See, Feel, Do!” He was very adamant that you needed to train this way and I absolutely agree. You need to see a technique, feel it done to you and then do it to someone else. Only in this way can you actually learn efficiently. Once you get the technique then you can break it down into the three areas. You may have a practice with a partner where you feel it and also do it. Or you may be teaching or demonstrating where you just do. Finally if you meditate and visualize then you can see! All three are essential and make sure that you do them all!

Fully Agree, Visualization is very important. I train Internal Chinese Martial Arts and Visualization is very important to the forms that we train. Since the majority of our training time is done alone the best way to get the hang of applications is through visualization. Visualization is also very important to the internal side of the training as well, If for no other reason than using visualization of the internal energy flow on order to see the most efficient way to get power to where you need it.
Hey Tim,
Great comments and you are absolutely right in that most of our training time is done alone and visualization is essential then. I also agree with visualization being important internally. Thanks for the comment!
