…..The vast majority of people and I do mean vast that train in the martial sciences do so for fun or fitness. Most of these people fit into a group that could be characterized or called a hobbyist. Meaning that it is to them like going biking, running, doing yoga, playing cards, etc. These people do it for fun and fitness or whatever reason and enjoy it and have a great hobby. I know a number of people like this personally and they are getting exactly what they want out of the martial sciences and my hat goes off to them. In other words I wish them the best and will help them out in any way that I can! There are also a few people who the martial sciences go beyond this and into a skill set for their profession or a life long passion! The people who do it simply to be effective in their profession like Law Enforcement, Military, Corrections, etc. need these skills for their specific work place. Quite often they do it here or there a few times a year or some do it more but the focus is to be fit and ready for a work place encounter. Some of them if they have the itch or so to speak then may also fall into that life long passion group but the vast majority simply do not. That last group is in general maybe a 1% group that the martial sciences mean almost everything to them. Few people are in this group. I know a good portion who are in this group simply because like attracts like most of the time. This group of people who train with a life long passion are in general though not always some of the finest martial practitioner’s that I have ever met. They in general just put a lot more time into their respective skill sets than anyone else really can. A friend of mine once said to me never to count how many hours that I have trained or keep track of how much I have spent. Those words have been good advice because knowing how much money I may have spent would probably not be a good thing and also knowing how many hours would well be irrelevant to my pursuit and passion. Irregardless of where you fall in these groups the martial sciences are so varied that they can provide what you are looking for! Find you place, your teacher, your system and enjoy it for what you want out of it!
