Joint Locks The IRT Way!

Rare Double Post Day!

…..One thing is for sure if you can manipulate a joint whether standing or on the ground then you have a great chance of gaining rudimentary control and or damaging it severely.  In order to affect a joint you need to have certain things happening to in general be successful with it.  In IRT we always try to soften up the opponent by striking and damaging them before taking the joint.  This way maybe their brain is fuzzy or mentally just not there and you can manipulate them easier.  If you cannot strike a press to break their structure and balance is a must.   Typically we utilize the following elements of control to achieve a joint lock whether standing or on the ground.

Elements of Control

1.  Entry

2.  Strike

3.  Manipulation

4.  Off Balance

5.  Takedown or Throw

6.  Finalization

Now the movements can of course be changed in order and if you are already on the ground you will not of course execute the takedown or throw but instead go to Finalization.  (ie. control, lock, hold, strike or neutralize)

…..Beyond the elements though you have the principles of control that clearly come into play.  Those I will save for another post at a later date or you can purchase one of my books where they I go into more details regarding them.  Instinctive Response Training Store

    Or have patience

My taiji Sifu is the only person I have ever crossed hands with that I have absolutely no idea I am about to be locked until I am. His answer to this when I ask him how he does this is “You lock yourself”

He redirects, absorbs and moves until your in the right position and then with little or no effort y9our locked. But then I guess over 50 years of training helps too 🙂
