Hey, I like a good story. I mean I really do like a good story. Especially ones about undefeated fighters, groups, etc. However, you have to understand that most of the time while there is truth in the story there is also a bit of exaggeration. Throughout the years I have heard hundreds of stories. Funny, how over time they grow and expand and take on a life of their own. The Gracie Challenge is one of those great stories. It goes that the family took on all comers and never lost. There is truth in there in that they certainly do appear to take on all comers. However, they have lost, tied, etc. Helio Gracie the father of the modern system that we know as Brazilian Jiujitsu lost in a match vs. Kimura and another one vs. Santana. Heck Helio professionally is recorded at 10 wins and 8 losses. There are many other stories of Gracie’s tying or losing that never made the lime light. Did they win most of their challenges? Absolutely, they did! Has martial practice been incredibly impacted by Brazilian Jiujitsu? Absolutely! As someone who grapples every day let me tell you the first few UFC’s changed they way martial practice is looked at as well as what practitioner’s do. Yet, if we look at the Gracie Challenge we can see through time that they have lost a few. Which is really no big deal! Stories do tend to get exaggerated through time especially when money and pride become involved.
Here is a recent fight where Robin Gracie lost as reported by Eastern Europe BJJ:
Everyone loses. No matter who you are or how good you become. Some where a long the line if you are competing, fighting, etc. you will lose.
That is just reality!
See You On The Mats!
