Train!

Picture Taken from a Rich Parsons Seminar!

Okay I am packing and getting ready to head off to Texas to teach at the MartialTalk Southern Meet & Greet this weekend.  It should be a great time with people getting together from all over.  The weekend festivities will include Kempo, Karate and Instinctive Response Training!  The Instructor’s will be Bob Rose, Master Johnson and Myself.  Definately this will be a great time.  Terry and Yolanda Stoker of Twin Dragon Tae Kwon Do always host excellent seminars so definately look them up if you are in the Dallas area!

Now todays Blog post is all about training and how to get yourself to that next level of skill set.  The first and most important thing to remember is that everyone and I do mean everyone needs a teacher or teacher’s so to speak.  In other words we all need to be students no matter how long or how good you are.  The moment you only become a teacher well you will stagnate a little bit so do not let that happen to you.  On your training path you will need to listen and seek out the small details of body movement that allow the more skilled practitioner’s to perform the feets that they do.  Over time if you pay attention to those details your skills too will grow in incredible ways!  Training in a class both group and private is essential.  The group class allows you to experience all different types of body styles from ectomorphs to mesomorphs and also endomorphs.  This is important because frankly you need to work with all different varieties or shapes, sizes and personalities.  In the group class you will get instruction, critique and refinement of skills sets and all of that is essential.  There is more of course but well I could write all day.  In the private or semi private setting you will receive slightly more detailed instruction and your skill set will grow even more.  You may not have as many different body shapes to work with but you will get the fine details that are sometimes hard to convey in a larger class.  This type of detailed instruction is essential and something that everyone needs.  Positive critique and detailed instruction leads in the end to great growth as a martial practitioner and that is what we all are trying to achieve.  During the course of your training you will want to attend seminars and experience what other instructors and systems have to offer.  This is a great way to grow and see what the world has to offer.  I regularly hold or bring in other arts instructors because I want to see what they do and how they do it.  I also want my fellow IRT practitioner’s to experience the same.  Seminars allow you to become more well rounded and they also help you to see with a finer eye the elements and principles that are used in Martial Science.  So to improve please go to as many seminars as you can and attend ones outside your chosen system.  You will be amazed at what you will learn.

Finally during the course of your training you will need to really train quite a bit on your own if you are serious about improving.  Class time, seminar time, etc. is just not enough.  You will need to seriously practice on your own and if you do so then your skills will really grow.  Practicing on your own is essential for growth!  Quite often I have small revelations while just working through certain skill sets.  These revelations sometimes lead to huge leaps in growth.  So in the end you will need to get some serious practice in on your own.  However, make sure that when practicing on your own you have a good grasp of practicing with good fundamentals as you do not want to practice something and in the end create a bad habit!

In the end your training is your responsibility!  No one can do it for you and no one can make you better.  If you are having a hard time or failing to learn certain things then you need to really get after it and take your training to the next level.  In other words you are going to have to motivate yourself and push your training so that you start getting some serious improvement!  In the end you get exactly what you put into the Martial Sciences!  So do your best and you will not be disapointed!
