Entering With Protection!

When entering in for a clinch, takedown or for a throw I like to be protected on my way in.  So I like to enter with protection.  I do not like to just shoot in when my opponent is in balance mentally and physically.  No I like to enter with protection when they are off balance, mentally stunned or confused with what I am doing.  How is this done?  Well there are quite a few ways to do it.  First off if you can get off line and come back in on an angle you have more protection than if you just dive in on a straight line.  So the angle will afford you some protection as you come in for that takedown, throw or clinch.  One of my favorites is to mentally off balance someone by shouting or saying their name.  Usually there is a millisecond where they compute what just happened and my goal is to come in during that millisecond.  Thus I am afforded some protection.  I also like to fake a strike which is close enough that if they do not react then they will get hit.  This fake is designed to get them moving backwards to avoid it and on their heels.  If they are on their heels and shifting weight that is an excellent time to come in and go for a takedown, throw or set up the clinch.  Sometimes it is advisable to let them close the distance for you.  So they come in throwing a strike, which means they have to come forward and plant weight.  That is a perfect time to enter in with protection.  You will be surprised at how effective this can be.  Yet another way is to enter in with a set defensive hand position that optimizes your protection during the entry.  These are just a few ways to enter with protection.  There are in reality quite a few more.  However, if you understand the gist of this blog entry you will come to realize that Entering With Protection is all about creating an opportunity for a clinch, takedown  or throw where you will not get hit or receive much damage if you do get hit.  Those who understand this enter with protection!
