The Importance Of Triangles!

…..If you look closely in many martial systems logo you will notice that they have a triangle.  Whether it is Brazilian Jiujitsu, many of the Filipino Martial Arts or in Budo Taijutsu you will find people talking about the lines used and then triangles will come into play.  This of course does not diminish straight lines, circles, half circles or circular movement but we will save that for another day.  Triangles and triangular movement is essential to creating good lines whether you are standing (vertical) or grappling. (horizontal)  In IRT we utilize allot of triangular footwork that allows us to move off line and then counter incoming attacks.  It does not mean that this is all we use but one aspect of what we do.  The lines of balance also work around the body in a triangular fashion.  Taking the balance and moving on a line that connects with the body’s natural triangles allows you to move away from an opponents balance point.  With their body in motion you will be able to break their balance and then you will have the ability to execute your technique.

During grappling besides the triangle choke there are many techniques that have a triangular framework within them.  These lines get played over and over again and if you are careful and notice them then you will be rewarded and your technique will improve.

Look at this page from Pekiti Tirsia to see some symbolization of Triangles in the Pekiti system: Pekiti Triangle

Triangles pop up again and again in various martial systems.  From Budo Taijutsu to Modern Arnis, IRT, Pekiti Tirsia and of course Brazilian Jiujitsu.  The lines moving around the human body create these natural triangles and if you can take advantage of them then you are certainly on your way.
