Taking Responsibility For Your Training!

website-angled-elbow5

…..Surprisingly enough or almost shockingly people come to a realization early on in their training that in order to cultivate these martial skills they are going to need to train hard.  This is hard work!  What sometimes eludes people though is that the skills they worked on so hard to get can disappear quickly if they are not maintained through constant training.  I typically come in contact with people who formerly have trained and they have found that their skill sets if there has been a long layoff ( say six months or more) have significantly or sometimes almost totally diminished.  That is quite a shock if you expected to have these types of skills forever.  No in the martial sciences if you blink and take some time off your skills will diminish.  So that brings us to the point of this blog post.  Your training is your responsibility! That is an absolutely true statement.  You will get whatever you put into your training and nothing more.  If you work hard you will see significant improvement.  If you do not work hard you will probably see no improvement and maybe some regression in your skills.  If you take a significant amount of time off then your skills will disappear and you will have to almost start over upon resuming training. (if you ever do)  So in the end it is kind’ve funny because you get what you deserve in your martial training.  If you are careful and choose a good instructor you will have a good instructor.  If you delve into the training and really work hard then you should see improvement.  If you slack off well then you will not see improvement and possibly lose your hard earned skill sets.  A good friend of mine who is a world class martial artist and also teaches is always saying when referring to a student: he or she needs to take some responsibility for his training. He invariably will then tell me how the person is not making any improvement because well they simply are not training enough to make that leap to the next level.  He constantly will coach them and be blunt and tell them hey you need to get busier.  Some times it works and some times it does not.  However, when we talk he will reiterate that in the end their training is their responsibility! So if you wish to progress in the martial sciences you need to train and understand that your skill sets depend on you training regularly and often.  How you do that in the end though is your responsibility!

See You On The Mats!

Great point. In one of my posts I talked about something similar. Instead of it being about maintaining skills though, it was about the mindset of “submitting oneself to a master”. If a person in our modern society wants to act like a “warrior”, I dont think that acting like a servant to an instructor is the way to get there IMO. Custom and courtesy in the dojo aside.
