…..Through out my life I have rarely missed a chance to train with someone. In other words when a certain instructor was in the area or I had a chance to train with someone then I made sure that I got to that seminar, training and learned as much as possible. I was blessed you see early on by meeting and training under a very open minded instructor who taught Tae Kwon Do and Modern Arnis. Within a month I had the opportunity to go to and train at a Remy A. Presas Modern Arnis seminar. Training with “The Professor” was simply a great learning experience for a very young martial practitioner. I then in a very short time had the opportunity to attend quite a few Dan Inosanto seminars. I kept on searching out knowledge and training over and over with these instructors and also many more. Even today almost thirty years later I go out of my way to travel to a seminar or bring someone in to teach so that I do not miss a chance. If you plan on getting better, then you have to put in a lot of practice and you need to experience different peoples methods of teaching. So when someone is in your area to teach or within driving distance then do not miss a chance and get over there and get some training in!

I regularly do not go to seminars because my view has been; what can you learn in a couple hours and I am not a fan of MA schools that require it because my belief is; if they can’t teach me what I need to learn why am I going there.
But I like your POV on the topic.
And due to a lack of training forced upon me from an injury I will be going to a few seminars this summer, if I am able. Who knows between what you wrote and what I experience I may just change my mind
Thanks
Hey Tim,
Once that injury recovers if you get a chance to go to a seminar or attend some training with a different instructor I think you will find that you probably will like it. Even if all you walk away with is that you enjoy your current training then you have gained some thing valuable. Quite often when I train with a different instructor it makes me appreciate the path and instructors I have worked with some times I learn some thing new and some times I just gain insight. In the end they both are valuable to me! 🙂
