Silva is a large man, but extremely well co-ordinated for his size. His stance is very solid and well balanced, his punches are accurate and powerful, he has good ground skills and is quite smart in his execution of what he does. He will take some beating by any man, as we will find out soon I think.
I agree with the Gracie brothers, Fedor was not beaten to a loss, this was a technical stoppage. I do wonder what might have happened in the final round, but feel that Fedor did not have a proper plan to counter the size advantage, so it may have been the writing on the wall. A Fedor of 5 years ago would have done far more damage.
But for anyone to say that size is not an advantage is just talking silly. They do not have weight divisions to protect the big from the small. The saying goes “a good big ‘un beats a good little ‘un any day of the week”. Silva used his size smartly in this fight to drain energy notably whilst pinning Fedor against the cage in the first round. This also works psychologically to create an obstacle (inferiority feelings) in the mind of the smaller opponent but it also drains a lot of energy for the smaller guy having to hold back a large guy who merely has to lean on him and use little energy. The mount is also hard to get out of when a large fighter knows how to use the weight advantage. Silva knew how to use it, so for him to say after the fight that his size was not a factor is downright insulting, he used it and that is that, it was there for us all to see!
