Taking The Hard Path To Mental Strength!

Some times in life everything cannot be easy!  In the Martial Sciences there are times when Taking The Hard path will yield you greater results.  In life pain and suffering some times produce brilliance.  I have witnessed it more than a few times in athletic endeavors.  It certainly holds true in other areas of life as well.  In the Martial Sciences there are times when things come easy to people.  So easy that they neglect them or focus too much on them.  Either can be very negative.  There are times in your training when in order to improve you need to search for your weaknesses or better yet have someone point them out to you.  Then you need to address then with relentless passion.  Some times you have to suffer in order to get better and yes it can be painful.  Now, I am not talking about pain that would be long-term damaging but…. there are times when there is no way around it that if you want to improve you are going to take a hard path!  Taking this hard path has one thing that tends to set people apart.  Mental strength!  Through hardship incredible mental strength is developed.  In a combative situation I would always believe that the person with stronger mental will should prevail.  I can remember in a work related situation meeting someone who had through his hard life acquired some serious mental strength.  So much so that when confronted with a violent much larger person he literally dressed that man down in conflict within seconds.  He was the proverbial small dog with a large bite.  In most walks of life he was not very functional.  However, through his hard life he had acquired mental strength through conflict that made him a very formidable opponent.  This is a positive and a negative in his regard because he was what I would classify as a non-functional human being.  On another note I have met some fine gentleman who have acquired tremendous mental strength through the years with hard, diligent training.  They invariably have had periods of training where they took The Hard Path to acquire this kind of will power.  In other words they forged their martial skills sets in fire through some serious pain and suffering as well as coupled with virtuous training.  They went the extra distance, suffered and came out the other side as fantastic martial practitioners.  They are some of my very best friends!  Everything in life is not going to be easy.  Some times you need to Take a Hard Path to experience enough that you come out the other side stronger and more functional than before!  In the end it is how well you can improve your weaknesses that will make the difference.  Some times you just need a punch in the face to realize it!

    Very good post and I agree

    Many want the easy or quick route and then they cannot figure out why they never reach their goal. I have known people like you wrote about and I will say my Sanda sifu is one of them. He grew up through the Cultural Revolution in China and times were very hard but he still trained Sanda and he came out the other side mentally and physically tough and he became a Medical Doctor. To be honest even without taking his Sanda into consideration he is likely one of the toughest people I know and he is a fine gentleman as well.

    Not sure if I am good or bad strong or weak but it is this “Taking the hard path” way of thinking that is got me to go back and train Xingyiquan. It will not be easy and finding s good sifu is hard but I am going to pursue it.

    I’m not giving up taijiquan but I just have to pursue Xingyiquan and find out where it takes me.

    And you want to talk suffering and building try standing in Santi shi for 5 minutes 🙂
