A Interesting Thing……

So the other day I was driving to go get my son’s tarantula and bearded dragon some crickets.  On my way I stopped at a light and noticed two women walking along.   I started to look carefully at them because one looked like a young woman whom I knew to be a criminal.  As I was watching her she looked back and I realized that yes indeed it was her.  Now this story has nothing to do with her or her past.  No instead it has to do with intention and the ability to perceive it.  When I started my observation of her she picked it up and directly and I do mean directly looked at me even though there was another car present!  When people live in a red zone environment. ie. war front, rough part of town, etc.  Where danger can and is present they tend to be in a state of awareness.  Because if they are not they will be perceived as prey by predators.  Predators on the other hand also are in this type of state because they are questing for prey.  When I lived in Detroit it was common place to look at someone and have them immediately turn and spot you.  When I moved to more suburban environments you could see an immediate drop off in the number of people who could pick up these types of signals.  You see they were not in a state or environment where it was as important to pick up these signals.  As a Martial Practitioner we need to be able to perceive intention and when other people are observing us at any and all times.  Whether it be during daylight or night-time in low light conditions.  We need to live and recognize the cues and accept them naturally like any animal would.  My dog perceives intention easily whether it is mine and I am happy with him or upset.  He also perceives the intention from people while out on a walk.  Once in a while he does not like someone.  That is important for us to note because he is perceiving something and that some thing is significant!  Pay attention to your gut feelings or any intuition that you have and accept it!

I first became very aware of the Predator/Prey mentality one night in the early eighties in Boston, Ma. I have since seen it several large cities. I have seen it in a few smaller ones as well and I believe in the smaller ones it has a lot to do with the economic health or lack thereof in that community. However in places I grew up in or where I currently live, both which are most definitely defined as suburbs it is not as prevalent. But ultimately I think this is about awareness of ones surroundings and in a large city or even some of the smaller ones it is part of survival. You have to be aware of your surroundings in order to avoid problems. However in the suburbs in is not as necessary. The problem occurs when the predators look to the suburbs for prey because many of those that live there simply do not pay attention because, in general, they do not have to.
