So what do I mean when I say that you should not live a lie in your Martial Science training? Well in general I am telling you to be pragmatic and realistic. True Martial Science training will give you skills that may help you in a moment of violence. Still you need to understand that many factors and variables become involved and that your skills do not make you Superman or Superwoman! No they most certainly do not! They may give you a slight edge but that may be all they give you.
Your skills give you an edge and your need to implement them at the right moment to make everything work. Also besides your martial skills you need the attributes and the mind set to back everything up! So make sure that you are training regularly as your martial skills deteriorate quickly when you are not. Then also work your attributes with cardiovascular training both aerobic and anaerobic and do not forget some body weight exercises and weight bearing exercises and of course flexibility training. You need to have a total package approach when training for reality. Finally mind set training. What do I mean by that? Well you need to understand that in the moment it can get pretty ugly so you need to figure it out before hand what you will and will not do in the moment and come to an understanding of this. On top of that you also need to understand the laws in your area and how you will cope with them.
Finding the right teacher can make all the differance in the world in this process of discovery. Someone who has experienced some violence can pass on tid bits of information that may give you a slight edge. A teacher like that is golden. However, they also have to have the accumulated knowledge and ability to teach it to make it work. (that is a must have)
Realistically speaking you are giving yourself an edge when studying these personal protection skills. What you do with that edge is up to you.
In the end it is all up to you in the moment!
