Well A Storm Has Hit Michigan!

…..Well we knew a good snow storm was coming last night and yes it did arrive.  I woke up today with at least six inches or more of snow on the ground and a considerable white out affect going on in the wee morning hours.  It is just to bad that the storm had to wait till last night and did not hit right during the middle of training on Wednesday night!  So how to take advantage of all this beautiful weather here in Michigan?  Well today I am heading outside to practice some movement utilizing footwork in the snow.  This should really be a good work out and I expect to be extremely tired after it.  I will also take some time to practice rolling and break falls, curl technique and standing up.  Since school is closed as well I will take the kids outside and get them to participate a little as well.  To end it all off I envision a snow ball fight!  (I will definitely need some serious footwork then) 🙂

…..Winter training allows you to work in encumbering snow gear such as boots, gloves, coats, scarves, hats, etc.  All of the GI chokes, etc are also easily usable during grappling training in the snow.  A good winter coat also acts as armor in a way so when striking you need to be picky where you strike.  We all need to become familiar with utilizing tools while wearing gloves.  Pulling out a folding knife and opening it is quite a bit easier with a glove less hand.  So sometimes that folding knife may have to be used in a striking manner initially.  A scarf readily translates to rope, chain or sarong skill sets and can be used to manipulate arms, take down someone or even as a choking tool.

…..Now this is the type of approach we should take to all weather conditions.  Snow, rain, mud, heat during Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.  Get outside and practice and see your skill sets grow!

See You On The Mats!
