…..So you are forced into a situation and you need to A. Get Away B. Engage Immediately. Some times those are just the options that you have at hand based on the other person or persons insisting on engagement. Some times in this instance it is good to create a mental diversion or distraction and momentarily create hesitation or a mental unbalancing of your opponent. I have used this in the past when hand cuffing some one by verbalizing to them some thing to momentarily distract them. It is in the end very effective to distract someone before and during a engagement in violence. It is snowing here and we have gone out and trained in the snow as a group recently. At the end of training I demonstrated how projecting (throwing) snow in the face of someone can momentarily blind them. Then it would be easy to either run away or engage with an advantage. Take out the snow aspect and put in grass, sand, rocks, coins, pepper spray, keys, coffee, water, pop, hat, glove, spit, etc. Anything can and could be used to throw into an attackers face and momentarily take their sight. In law enforcement and security work officers regularly use a flash light to the person eyes that they are investigating so that they can take away their night vision momentarily. This is simply a huge advantage in any encounter! Beyond the physical though you can also verbally create a distraction that may give you an advantage. You could say someones name and then act, spirit shout, call for your friends and then if they hesitate act accordingly. There are many opportunities to create a distraction. In the moment you just need to find the right one!
