……Martial body damage, what is that? Well the training in the Martial Sciences has the potential not only to heal or help you lose weight and more but it can also create damage to your body if you do not do it correctly or if your genetics are predisposed to certain injuries. Everyone who grapples regularly and works with joint manipulations and locks knows that there is a chance that damage can occur. This is a fact and if you want these martial skills then you need to be willing to possibly pay a price. Personally I have some damage but I have also been able to rehabilitate the damage to acceptable levels. I have also witnessed other people incur some body damage as well and they have also been able to rehabilitate that damage to a certain degree. Why did this post come about? Well a good friend of mine who is a young man (in his forties) is going under the knife at the end of the month. This friend’s hip has finally given out and it will have to be replaced. This really is a major surgery for his age and while he will make a recovery he most certainly will not be able to do the things he used to do. I am sure that genetics play greatly in this surgery but also years and years of kicking the air and locking those kicks out have also taken their toll. (his knees also went bad a while back as well) I gave up kicking the air hard a long, long, long, long time ago as it did not seem right to force a lock so violently on my joints. It instead seems more natural to exert the force on a heavy bag, etc. (plus it is more fun)
…..We all need to watch what we do in training and constantly strive to improve. We are after all on a Martial Path that brings the mental, spiritual and physical together. We are also athletes and need to treat our bodies with care and take as much precaution as we can so that we do not sustain major damage. This will ensure that we can keep on training and improving throughout our life. It will also ensure that we stay fit, lose weight, exercise our mind, etc. During the course of your training try to avoid martial body damage. Make that some thing that you look out for so that you can keep going!
See You On The Mats!
