Throws and Takedowns!

…..Throws and Takedowns are very, very important self defense skill sets.  They can give you dominate position but they can also end a confrontation immediately by the impact.  Just watch a good throw in an MMA cage and quite often the person thrown does not get back up very fast!  Imagine those same throws on concrete or tile, etc.  There are a couple of things that are crucial in a throw or takedown and while there are more I am only going to comment on the following parts of the throw.  One is breaking balance of your opponent.  This is essential as if they have balance they will be very, very hard to move.  So breaking their balance helps in your ability to gain the advantage and execute the throw or takedown.  Make sure that whenever you are training that this is some thing you always pay attention too!  The next is some thing that people and instructors some times forget.  That is back/spine position.  Your spine should look like this \ relative to your opponents spine which should look like this when their balance is broken \.  Line them up like so: Opponent \,\ You!  Then a throw in < that direction!  So the equation would look a little like this _ (opponent on ground) < =\+\!  Or if you reverse it and throw them the opposite direction /+/=>_!  So having your spine at an angle gives you balance and an angle that is beneficial to your throw.  Breaking an opponents balance and having your spine going in the right direction lends well to your ability and technique in any throw that you execute.  These are two very essential points to a throw or takedown and once you get these regularly into your arsenal you may find that your ability to throw will improve dramatically.  Lately we have been doing pool throws almost every day.  Having your spine going in the right direction and breaking your opponents balance is as always very important and essential in being successful.  So break their balance and place your spine in the right place and you will be on your road to being effective with most throws and takedowns!

See You On The Mats!
