…..Just the other day at a friend’s school I had a good workout and training session. He had called me up and had some free time between classes and private lessons so he wanted to get some blade work in our IRT methodology. We worked on some knife skills for him particularly involving movement and then he showed me some cutting edge Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Then we rolled against each other for about a half hour or so. Good workout, good times with a close friend. My friend mentioned to me how tough it is right now. Vegas has just eclipsed Michigan with the worst unemployment and businesses are hurting because of it. Typically in tough times businesses that are geared towards a hobby or recreation suffer. People simply have less money and therefore do not spend it on things that are not essentials. In Vegas many Training Halls opened up during the boom and are tied into some pretty tight and very pricey leases or they bought a building and are now under the burden of a building that is worth less than what they owe on it. This can create some interesting dynamics. My friend is one of the best in Vegas at what he does but he is feeling the pinch too in some dramatic ways. Now do not worry as Vegas will bounce back in a big way but in the mean time people that run businesses need to be creative and tighten their belts. One thing that the Martial Sciences teach you is that if you have to make tough decisions you can do so. More importantly a good Martial Science will teach you to make smart decisions and weight your options and to also be intuitive. Do not be rash, think through your decisions carefully and always trust your gut intuition! Even in tough times if you think things through carefully and bounce them off someone else you can generally find the best decision and then act on it. In IRT we have some thing called finding the right path! This can apply to entering into a technique during sparring or a violent encounter to making a life changing choice or some thing else. Finding the right path is an essential skill set to have in life. Each path is different and you need to find the one that is best for you and your family. It can be intuitive and also rational. What is important is that you come to trust your decisions by making good choices throughout your life! Once you do that the world literally is an oyster for you!
