Okay the story is that a man walked into an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada yesterday and opened fired with an AK 47 killing 4 and injuring more. He then went on to kill himself. If you had been there what would you have done? Would you be prepared for an event like this? How would you survive? In an event like this survival is what is important. Do not get shot (hide) and or get the heck out of dodge if you can. What if you can’t hide or get out of dodge? Maybe you have kid’s, wife, etc. Do you have a plan B? Personally, I would have a couple of options ranging from firing with my firearm, drawing a knife and closing the distance or trying to close the distance and attempting the unenviable empty hand disarm. So in a situation like that for me I have a few options. Mind you not one is great facing a man with an AK 47 but I have a few. As a serious Martial Practitioner we owe it to ourselves to prepare with a survival mind-set. This definitely comes into play in our Martial Science training. It also needs to come into play in other areas of our life. Like having first aid kits, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, extra food for our family, etc. Now I am not saying push the panick button and go to the nth degree but anyone who is serious about the Martial Sciences should attempt to be reasonable prepared for emergencies even beyond the physical hand to hand type. We need to look at the emergencies that just happened along the East Coast with the hurricane and think to ourselves are we prepared for a weather emergency? What about a massive fire? Flood? You get the idea. Then when it comes to physical violence are we preparing for all eventualities or really a very specific eventuality? When I was a kid around thirteen years old I wanted to be physically effective in a physical encounter with other people. That over time became a “mantra” for me in that I wanted to be physically effective and I pursued it with a lot of vigor. As a serious martial practitioner it is still my “mantra” a driving force in my pursuit. I just want to be physically effective now in any emergency! Whether it be a predatory assault on myself or my family, fire, earthquake, hurricane, etc. I want to be prepared and not thinking about what to do in an emergency moment! If some thing happens really what would you do? Are you prepared?
Food for thought my friends, food for thought!
