Here you can see Grand Tuhon Gaje from the Pekiti Trisia system talking about circular motion with a knife.
One thing he did not mention but is very important to understand is that when you have a knife and someone grabs your knife hand it is very easy to get a release with a circular motion. (very easy and a cut as well)

Absolutely Tim you will find similar movement in most systems designed for self defense!
Reality: for all it’s wondrous variety — the human body is a pretty standard model. There are just so many ways to effectively move it for defense. Accordingly — when you look into them, you’ll see a lot of overlap in the techniques across styles. Where they differ is in the strategies, and in some principles used to obtain, generate, and sustain power.
