Trying To Be Cute….

To often when checking out training or watching some thing on video I find a martial practitioner trying to be cute with their training.  What do I mean by this?  I simply mean that they are doing a technique or set of techniques that are too complicated to pull off in real-time against a real resisting opponent.  Now this does not invalidate the training.  No, if the training is geared towards developing attributes and other skill sets then it is fine.  The problem lies when the practitioner who is training in this unrealistic method believes that it will work.  There in lies the problem.  The Martial Sciences are not cute.  At their core they are brutal, devastating and debilitating movements that are fairly simple and straight forward.  When you are training you need to look critically at your system and evaluate it.  Will it work?  Will I be functional if I have to use this?  For someone like me this is essential!  My whole life is dedicated to be functional and efficient with what I do.  For me trying to be cute is not a goal.  The goal is to be able to protect myself or my loved ones in a moment of extreme violence!  The Martial Science that I personally practiced is geared toward this and I make sure that it can work and pressure test it when appropriate!

Agreed, I have seen a lot of overly complicated MA one class I watched absolutely amazed me at how many times they hit, kicked, punched and jump around for one SD app, and the practitioners of this are tend to be rather rabid when it comes to telling you how awesome their art is and how most others are not. To be honest I do believe some of what they do would work fine, they just need to weed it out a bit becasue it is way to complicated

I have been giving a new martial art a try and there is nothing cute in it. It is aggressive and direct and I rather like it. It is Jun Fan Gung Fu and I have been very impressed by it so far, Heck just a few hours ago and I am amazed at how direct things can be when I messed up and blocked an uppercut…sadly the other guy threw a hook and I took one on the jaw and it reminded me about reality but me being me my first thought was DAMN that was cool

    Hey Tim,

That sounds like a very fun and exciting opportunity for you to train in Jun Fan Gung Fu. Definitely that will keep your martial juices flowing. That system is definitely straight forward and to the point which for a martial practitioner interested in Self Defense that is crucial!
