Every potential violent situation is unique in and of itself.  Ryan is correct in stating that it depends in each situation based on the factors that are happening in that moment!  My advice to any student of the martial sciences is to question everything that you are taught.  Check everything with your lawyer and learn everything that you can regarding personal protection.  Perfect Awareness, Avoidance and the Action in your personal protection!
