If you are serious about personal protection you need solid striking skills. Jab, cross, hook, uppercut, overhand, ridge hand, roundhouse kick, front kick, scoop kick, side kick, etc. You have to be well rounded and be able to strike to complement your weapons and grappling skill sets. Never be one dimension, not for personal protection skills. You can specialize but you need to be able to be well rounded so you can dominate in any area where the situation takes you.
