If you remember one thing in your Martial Science training always remember to control the Distance! No matter what, control of the distance through movement or through having a weapon that is longer or in the case of a firearm, reaches a farther distance, is essential. Controlling the distance gives you an advantage. I have witnessed many a Martial Practitioner forget this.
Distance is essential and controlling it is the key. If an individual has a rifle and is up against an individual with a handgun. If that individual can keep his distance far enough away that it mitigates the effectiveness of the handgun then he or she has maintained control of the distance and has an extreme advantage.
Ar15 in 5.56 rifle effective range =
- Point Targets (Precision): 500–600+ yards with proper optics and training.
- Service/Combat (Area Targets): 400–500 meters.
- Self-Defense/Terminal Effectiveness: 200–300 yards (before fragmentation capability decreases).
9mm handgun rffective range =
- < 25 Yards: Ideal defensive range for rapid, accurate shots.
- 25 – 50 Yards: Effective range for law enforcement and competitive shooters.
- 50 – 100+ Yards: Highly difficult; usually requires an experienced shooter or a specialized pistol
The effective distance of these two firearms is not really close.
So if you can control the distance, advantage rifle. Not to mention terminal ballistics of a mediocre rifle round is more damaging than a self defense/combat round from a 9mm handgun.
As seen here:
The same could be said for someone utilizing a katana vs a shoter FMA sword such as a ginunting, talibong, etc. The person with the katana has the advantage. They have a longer tool that allows them to control the distance better.
Just like an individual with a saber has a slight reach over a katana.
Not to mention someone who has a tachi, the battlefield sword over an individual with a katana.
Now with all that said if person with a handgun is close they can beat a person with a rifle. A FMA practitioner with more skill could beat a person with a katana just like a person with a katana has a good chance of winning against a person with a saber. Just like a person with a katana can win against a person with a tachi. Just like a smaller person can beat a taller person. There are no absolutes in the real world but… if you control the distance and it plays to your strengths, you are giving yourself an advantage. I will personally take any advantage I can get. Understand, that any advantage is really good to have in a moment of vioence!
See You On The Mats!!!
